In 1839 five mounted Scouts ranged over a broad area of wilderness seeking a site for
a capital city for The Republic of Texas. A location on the north bank of
the Colorado River was chosen, where beauty and natural resources were
abundant. The site was occupied at
the time by a four-family settlement who had given this area the name Waterloo
because of its' bountiful springs. William Barton was among these
families - this area today is, rightfully so, called Barton Springs.
Quickly renamed "Austin" in honor of the Father of Texas, Stephen F.
Austin, the city was officially incorporated on December 27, 1839.
